Landscape planning, design and management are major contributors to the achievement of environmentally sustainable development (ESD). This paper discusses the characteristics of development in the Australian
landscape. It then discusses the contribution of landscape architects to ESD including where they work; the techniques they use; and, some specialisations. It uses a range of case studies to explore how more
sustainable landscapes have been achieved in Australia - in urban, sub-urban, rural and remote environments.
