Design Guide and Principles for the Visual Assessment and Design of Wind Farms

Dennis N Williamson

This guide addresses visual resource, siting and design issues associated with wind farm development.  This is an introductory overview of the key visual resource issues that should be addressed in the planning, design and visual effects assessment of wind farms.  While the importance of the broader spectrum of landscape values is acknowledged, this paper focuses on the visual or scenic amenity values as one of the more critical issues of community concern.  Visual resource assessment, scenic perception research, best practice principles and techniquesare indicated and a number of references and websites provided for further reading.  Forthcoming notes on specific visual and other landscape value issues will provide additional information.
