This Ecological Design Strategy is based on systems thinking where a particular development is placed within its local social-ecological setting and bioregional context. Ecological Design is a way of thinking whereby potential long term social, economic or ecological problems are deliberately identified and considered at the design phase of a construction project or manufacture of an industrial product or process. Following risk assessment and cost-benefit analysis, these potential long term problems can then be eliminated from the design, construction and manufacturing processes through substitution with 'benign-by-design' alternatives.
