GEN 32

Contaminated Land

John Gelder

This note, GEN 32, originally published in May 2000, was reviewed by John Gelder in June 2005.  This paper is now considered out of date and will be republished in due course.

Over a century of intensive industrial and agricultural activity has left a spate of contaminated land areas, now being identified as possible sites for re-development.  Increasingly, design professionals are facing the challenges of treating contaminated soils.  This Note outlines the legal issues of remediation and who is responsible for the clean-up costs.  It also explores various options of treating contaminated sites and how these areas can be safely reused.
