Travel Demand Management – Reducing the Negative Impacts of the Car

Elizabeth Ampt
Steer Davies Gleave

While the car is an essential part of our lives and has had a key role in determining urban form in the western world, it is also creating frustrating and damaging impacts.  Many attempts have been made to change this using 'supply-side' approaches, such as large-scale changes to the road or land-use infrastructure.  Travel Demand Management (TDM) approaches the issue from the other side – giving people options to change, so that more desirable transport, social, economic and/or environmental objectives can be achieved.  This paper describes TDM in Australia giving both options and examples of applications.
