The rapid growth of tourism over the last few decades has led to an increased demand by tourists wishing to experience pristine environments and fragile cultures. As a consequence, assessment methodologies have been developed to assist in identifying sustainable tourism and ecotourism through both process and performance based tools. These tools can be used by designers and developers of tourist facilities to ensure that the full range of environmental and social opportunities available for a tourism project is considered and, where appropriate, are implemented.
