This article provides an overview of the environmental impacts of architectural coatings through an analysis of the key environmental loads in the life cycle. It also provides guidance on practical steps that architects can apply to reduce the environmental impact in the application and use of paints. Coatings discussed here include interior and exterior water-based and solvent-based (oil) topcoats, primers, and undercoats designed as protective or decorative coatings.
