The supply of potable water to houses in Australian cities can be supplemented by the reuse of wastewater generated within the home, thus reducing the demand for potable water and possibly securing supplies of water during times of water restrictions.
This note describes the characteristics of grey and blackwater produced in Australian homes and discusses the technology options that exist for treating these wastewater streams in order that they may be safely disposed of or reused domestically. The article discusses approaches that are applicable to single households but more likely, due to economic reasons, to be applied to multi-residential and some commercial situations.
