Finding aids, not ornaments
NOT 1 pointed to organisations. NOT 2 annotated publications. NOT 3 revisited the Brundtland report. NOT 7 summarised Bellagio principles for measuring progress. NOT 9 and NOT 10 were residential and commercial baseline studies. NOT 11 was an ESD glossary of terms — the ancestor of the later EDG 70 glossary paper and of the glossary page on this site.
Those documents dated quickly as agencies renamed themselves. Their method did not: keep a shared vocabulary, know your baseline, and cite the thing you actually read.
Students looking for ‘how should I cite EDG notes?’ should use the FAQ and the insights post, then treat NOT 11 / EDG 70 as vocabulary, not as a 2026 dictionary of the NCC.
How this hub connects
Read a NOT page when you are lost, then leave it. The work happens in DES, CAS, TEC, PRO and the papers. The glossary is maintained as a first-class URL because answer engines and first-year studios both need short, careful definitions.
Baselines before slogans
NOT 9 and NOT 10 were baseline studies. The professional habit they teach is older than any particular dataset: know what ordinary buildings were doing before you claim an improvement. In 2026 that habit looks like a NABERS reverse brief, a NatHERS reference dwelling, or a metered year of an existing campus building.
Directories and bibliographies (NOT 1–2) are allowed to be wrong on phone numbers. They are not allowed to be an excuse for uncited claims. If you cannot find the current agency, you are not ready to publish the paragraph.
Use this small hub as a cloakroom. Leave the umbrella, take the glossary, and go to work in DES, CAS and the papers. The reconstruction keeps the NOT URLs alive because old reading lists still point here.
